We’ve heard rumors of Apple working on a new 16 to 16.5-inch MacBook Pro ever since analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first floated the idea and now a new report has Samsung in talks with Apple about building the displays for the new computer. Those displays, according to the report, are OLED.
The report itself is offered up by Korean site The Elec, which isn’t one that has a history of providing information on such things, correct or otherwise. With that in mind, it’s always worth taking this with a pinch of salt, at least for now.

According to industry sources, Apple is considering adoption of OLED displays in its high-end “pro” models of notebook and tablet PC product lines. The new 16-inch ‘MacBook Pro’ with OLED display will be added to the notebook lineup and the existing 11-inch ‘iPad Pro’ display from LCD to OLED.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been suggesting the new MacBook Pro designs are on the way for a while, with a launch at some point in 2019. He didn’t mention what the display technology would be at the time, although he did later say that a 15-inch to 17-inch MacBook Pro would bee released with new mini-LED technology in 2021.
It’s possible that the new The Elec report is a combination of the two things, although it’s difficult to really know what’s going on, especially for a product that may or may not be two years out. The new report also has Samsung making OLED panels for new iPad Pro models, and again, Kuo had mini-LED tablets arriving in late 2020 at the earliest.
As is always the case with these kinds of rumors, we’re left with little choice but to wait and see how things pan out. The idea of an OLED MacBook Pro does sound interesting because of all the advantages that offers, but again, we’ll see how things develop.
