Report: Apple Looking To Fund Original Content For Podcasts Service

Apple is planning to fund original podcasts that will be available via its own platforms, according to a new report by Bloomberg.

While Apple has been the most trusted podcast directory for many years, it hasn’t created its own exclusive podcasts unlike competitors like Spotify. This move would change that.

Apple’s Podcasts app is the most-used podcast player on Apple’s platforms which would give it a huge lead and potential audience if it was to plow money into its own, funded, podcasts. It’s likely that those podcasts would be given pride of place in the most popular app around, immediately giving them a leg up over other podcasts. However, the Bloomberg report suggests that Apple’s plans are still in the early stages.

Executives at the company have reached out to media companies and their representatives to discuss buying exclusive rights to podcasts, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the conversations are preliminary. Apple has yet to outline a clear strategy, but has said it plans to pursue the kind of deals it didn’t make before.

The big question is whether Apple would try to find a way to make money from such podcasts.

It’s possible they would be part of the Apple Music subscription, but with Apple continuing to launch new services at a rate of knots it’s possible yet another would be launched with podcasts at its core.

Given the fact that Podcasts comes pre-installed on all iPhones and iPads it’s easy to see why podcast makers might want to jump in, too.
