Lead unc0ver developer @Pwn20wnd has taken to Twitter to advise that those interested in an iOS 12.2 jailbreak should save their blobs and refrain from upgrading to iOS 12.3. The public service announcement comes almost immediately after Apple’s public release of iOS 12.3.
In the current landscape, it’s only possible jailbreak up to iOS 12.1.2 via tools like Uncover or Chimera. Both of those jailbreak utilities offer an extremely positive experience and will leave iPhone and iPad owners liberated on iOS 12.0 through iOS 12.1.2.
However, there has been rumblings and murmurings about a potential progression which would see unc0ver being expanded to offer iOS 12.2 support. Reading between the lines, @Pwn20wnd seems to have all-but confirmed that speculation with his tweet on the topic:
iOS 12.3 was released. Save blobs for iOS 12.2 and do not upgrade if you are interested in a jailbreak.
The advice here is very simple: anyone interested in jailbreaking their device on iOS 12.2 should save their blobs as soon as is humanly possible and should give iOS 12.3 a wide berth and refrain from upgrading to that firmware via Apple’s Software Update mechanism. It doesn’t take much reading between the lines to ascertain that this likely means that an iOS 12.2 jailbreak is incoming.
There are multiple corners of the jailbreak community actively crying out for a jailbreak beyond iOS 12.1.2 with those people currently sitting on iOS 12.1.4. It’s unknown if any jailbreak released for iOS 12.2 will actively include iOS 12.1.3 and iOS 12.1.4, or if any exploit used was actually exposed in iOS 12.2 and therefore doesn’t apply to those firmware versions. It’s very likely that we will find out more as time progresses and as @Pwn20wnd or other developers on that team drip-feed information into the community.
Currently, unc0ver caters for devices running up to iOS 12.1.2 and has been heralded as a great success of the jailbreak community and championed as “how a jailbreak should be” thanks to openness and inclusion.
It’s very difficult to continually know what is going on behind the scenes in this particular community but we can all keep our fingers crossed that this latest public service announcement means that a jailbreak for iOS 12.2 is coming sooner rather than later. We will provide any additional information as it becomes known.
