Jay “Saurik” Freeman released an update to Cydia Substrate earlier in December, bringing with it full support for the Unc0ver jailbreak. Now, eleven days after the release, two additional updates have been pushed out in versions 0.9.7010 and 0.9.7011.
Freemans’s previous release on December 18th was classified as being one of the most tested versions of Substrates to date. That release was entirely iOS 11-centric and looked to bring full Substrate support to the Unc0ver iOS 11 jailbreak, packaged together and offered by Pwn20wnd. Immediately after that release, a growing number of device owners starting reporting issues with their device freezing and certain problems coming to light when attempting to run a number of different jailbreak tweaks.
After reporting the issue in a dedicated thread on GitHub, Substrate creator and maintainer Freeman managed to track down the issue, replicate the problem, and advise that a fix was currently in progress and would be released when it was ready. That fix has now been tested and deployed in the form of two consecutive Cydia Substrate updates, taking the package from version 0.9.7000 to 0.9.7010 and then onto version 0.9.7011, which is the latest and most up to date version available.
The reported freezing issues have not only been fixed but some device owners are reporting that their device feels a lot faster and more responsive after the latest Substrate update. An update from Freeman confirmed the release as well as some of changes and challenges therein:
I have pushed 0.9.7011 with an attempt to prevent Substrate from being killed by Jetsam.
(FWIW, I realize that a lot of people are saying they have experienced a “respring loop”—as in, SpringBoard starting over and over again, but crashing each time—but not a single person has provided evidence of this: all I’ve seen is evidence of is a single attempt to restart all daemons getting “stuck”; I have managed to replicate this behavior, and it is due to a window of opportunity where Substrate being killed while waiting for a mach port to recycle leads to the process it is hooking not starting.)
We may have witnessed the end of an era recently with the closing down of the Cydia Store but it’s great to see that Saurik is still actively putting right the wrongs as far as his other packages are concerned.
