The Electra Team is hot on the heels of Pwn20wnd and his team. The unc0ver jailbreak was recently updated to version 3.5.0 offering iOS 12.4 support.

Coolstar and the Electra Team have now followed suit by pushing out a new Chimera update with support for iOS 12.4 on A9-A11 devices.

The latest Chimera release takes the popular jailbreak app to version 1.2.8 and, as mentioned, brings immediate support for Apple’s iOS 12.4 firmware installed A9-A11 devices. As is typical, the update was announced via Twitter via the official @electra_team account.

Chimera 1.2.8 is now available! Adds support for iOS 12.4 on A9 – A11 devices!

A subsequent bug fix 1.2.9 and 1.3.0 has followed since and includes following changes:

Chimera 1.2.9 is now available! This bundles the package updates that were pushed after 1.2.8, and should fix issues with installing certain packages (such as NewTerm or Anemone 3)

Chimera 1.3.0 adds support for A8 devices on 12.4

With this latest Chimera update, device owners will be able to jailbreak iOS 12.4 as long as it is running on a compatible device. This compatibility list goes back as far as iPhone 6 and runs up to Apple’s 2017 flagship, the iPhone X. That includes devices like iPhone 7, the iPad sixth-generation, and even iPad mini 3. iPhone 5s users will need to look past Chimera and download the latest Unc0ver offering as there is no support for that device with this release.

Neither of the current jailbreak tools offers support for Apple’s latest devices running iOS 12.4, which includes iPhone XS/XS Max, iPhone XR, and the most recent iPad Pro models, all of which are becoming increasingly popular due to their age and affordability. The Electra Team’s Chimera jailbreak can be useful for those aforementioned device types but they would need to be running an earlier version of Apple’s iOS platform, and not the latest iOS 12.4 release.

It is undeniably good news that Apple device owners have multiple options when it comes to jailbreaking devices at the moment but it’s definitely not without its issue. As an example, in addition to having limited device support, Chimera users are being asked to repeat the jailbreak process over and over if it should fail the first time for whatever reason.

This indicates that the reliability and stability of the latest release aren’t exactly where it should ve for a production release. Still, this gives enthusiastic jailbreakers another option and shows that there is still progress being made in the ongoing cat and mouse game between jailbreakers and Apple Inc.

You can grab the latest Chimera update as an IPA file over at chimera.sh and then install it using Cydia Impactor.
