So, Samsung might be heading for a bit of a fall with the Galaxy Fold, and it’s not even in the hands of real people yet. So far, three tech reviewers have highlighted that their review units’ displays have failed after less than two days of use.
The problems started when CNBC’s Steve Kovach shared a video showing his Galaxy Note’s display flickering and just generally being very unhappy about life. It’s certainly not right, and it almost looks as if the phone’s foldable display is actually two distinct panels with a line down the middle.
This was then followed by The Verge’s Dieter Bohn sharing the news that his Galaxy Fold had also failed after a bulge appeared in the hinge of his device. That bulge ultimately turned into what looks like telltale screen failure with dead pixels appearing in lines emanating from the aforementioned bulge.
It’s a distressing thing to discover just two days after receiving my review unit. More distressing is that the bulge eventually pressed sharply enough into the screen to break it. You can see the telltale lines of a broken OLED converging on the spot where the bulge is.
Finally, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that his review unit was also malfunctioning. Gurman did say that he removed a film from the front of his device, which Samsung has confirmed should not be done, although it did apparently look like a protector that would normally be removed after delivery. In fact, YouTube’s Marques Brownlee also reported that he, too removed the film believing that it was a temporary one. Presumably, buyers will do exactly the same, too.
The Galaxy Fold costs $1980 and will go on sale on April 26th. Whether the company will respond to these issues remains to be seen, but given these handsets lasted less than two days, this doesn’t bode well for how things will pan out when larger numbers find their way into the hands of users.
